Monochrome Maps of Old Ljubljana

If you look closely, you will notice that Ljubljana castle is positioned in the middle of this map. Ljubljana castle was not the romantic fairytale abode of royalty. Rather, being on the edge of various empires, it was a fort, a garrison, a military position, a prison, and a home for the poor. Around this castle hill, the town grew over two millennia, through wars, famine, earthquakes and fires.

And this leads us to the second part to the history of Ljubljana. Legend has it that Jason and the Argonauts sailed from the Black Sea, to the Danube, Sava and finally the Ljubljanica, with the stolen Golden Fleece. They stopped at a lake in the Ljubljana marshes where Jason battled a dragon, which then became the Ljubljana Dragon, and defeated it. They disassembled their ship, carried it to the Adriatic, and sailed to Greece.

Ustavili so se ob jezeru na Ljubljanskem barju, kjer se je Jazon spopadel z zmajem, ki je nato postal Ljubljanski zmaj, in ga premagal.
