Mesmerizing Vurnikova Hiša

Maybe one of the most photographed facades in Ljubljana. The impossibly bold colours are a magnet for cameras and tourists.

Architecturally it is really nothing to write home about. It is rather the designs on the facade that are its claim to fame. These designs were a symbol of rising Slovenian nationhood, after the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We wonder what the benefit was of replacing an Emperor in Vienna with a King in Belgrade. Nonetheless, the change affected the culture for a short period of time.

Arhitekturno res ni ničesar, o čemer bi lahko pisali. Prej so motivi na fasadi tisti, ki zahtevajo slavo. Ti motivi so bili simbol vzhajajoče slovenske narodnosti po razpadu Avstro-Ogrske. The birth of national pride, the colours on this building are the historical tricolour of Kranjska, and the depictions inside show typical Slovenian ethno-scenes.

Interestingly, the artwork was done by the Austrian Helena Kottler, who married the Slovenian Vurnik. The people that guided Slovene nationhood for a little while after WW1 were able to do so mainly because of the benefits, like education and business networks, of having been part of a decent empire for so many centuries.
