Emporium Galerija Art Nouveau

There are little bits of Paris even in Ljubljana, as it turns out. We have tracked down a few Parisian Art Nouveau entrance canopies in this city. 

Tudi v Ljubljani je nekaj malega Pariza, kot kaže. V tem mestu smo izsledili nekaj pariških secesijskih vhodnih nadstreškov.

This neat canopy is at the entrance of the Emporium Gallery in the nuclear centre of the city, right across from the Prešeren monument. This stunning building housed Ljubljana's first department store, the Center Merkur. These were the glory days of department stores everywhere, and Ljubljana was no different.

Financed by the merchant businessman Feliks Urbanc, who married into the very successful Krisper family, the business later went to his two sons. Urbanc initially ran a store at Stari Trg, and later expanded to build this beauty, designed by the Graz architect Friedrich Sigmundt.

Posel, ki ga je financiral trgovski podjetnik Feliks Urbanc, ki se je priženil v zelo uspešno družino Krisper, je pozneje prešel v roke njegovih sinov. Urbanc je sprva vodil trgovino na Starem trgu, kasneje pa se je razširil in zgradil tega lepotca, ki ga je zasnoval graški arhitekt Friedrich Sigmundt.

The entire family declared themselves native Slovenians in the Austrian Empire, as well as the later Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Despite this, the communist authorities, in 1945, declared them German and one son, Franc, had to flee the country while the state simply took the business and building from the family. 

Celotna družina se je v Avstrijskem cesarstvu, pa tudi kasnejši Kraljevini Jugoslaviji, izjavljala za staroselske Slovence. Kljub temu jih je komunistična oblast leta 1945 razglasila za nemške in en sin Franc je moral pobegniti iz države, država pa je družini preprosto vzela podjetje in stavbo.

You can see the face of Feliks Urbanc under the left foot of Mercury, the Roman god that was the namesake of the Center Merkur, standing upon the roof.
